Mykonos Muse

Hitting bookshelves any day now — Mykonos Muse, a stunning collection of photographs by Lizy Manola and many more talented photographers who have been inspired by the ‘island of the winds’.  And two chapters by me, chronicling my coming of age on the most hedonistic, wild, and exciting of all the Greek isles.

Published by Assouline, Mykonos Muse chronicles the culture and society that has defined Mykonos over the past century—from its days as a hideout for such luminaries as Le Corbusier, Lawrence Durrell,  John Paul Gaultier, and Alexander McQueen to its era-defining years as a sanctuary for the hippy scene and gay community, to its predominant party scene.  Discover the myths and characters who have made this legendary island a perennial favourite of the bohemian set.

Secret London, Unusual Bars and Restaurants

‘We all want to be one of those infuriatingly cool people who nonchalantly ushers friends/dates down a hidden sidestreet and into a secret bar. Now, thanks to this brilliant new guidebook, we can be. Memorise it from cover to cover.’ – Evening Standard

‘Howard doesn’t limit herself to the places with good food and service. She frequently picks out eccentric eateries where the venue or experience makes up for flat fare. She writes like a particularly eloquent friend, eager to tell you about her latest discovery… and the book’s all the better for it. The perfect gift for that friend who thinks Cafe Rouge is a bit exotic.’  – Londonist

Secret London, An Unusual Guide

‘The best guide to alternative London ever – an essential purchase…’ – The Londonist

‘A fascinating, well-researched London guidebook that gets under the skin of the capital…Quite simply brilliant.’ – The Travel Editor.com

‘Londoners will find this guidebook as fascinating as tourists: a floating church, dodo bones, a newly discovered Masonic temple and a members’ club for moustache wearers are just some of the quirky artefacts and institutions to be found in the city’s more obscure corners.’ – The Evening Standard

‘..still racing off the shelves faster than we can order it.’ – Untitled Books

Ultimate Food Journeys: Greece

‘The length of the flight to Africa might be forgettable, as is the name of that new friend met at a Parisian cafe, but the memory of an amazing food experience never fades…Such is the idea behind DK Eyewitness Travel’s book “Ultimate Food Journeys,” a 330-page stunner filled with dining inspiration and tips to guide readers along the most epic of food journeys.’ – Huffington Post

I contributed the Greece chapter to this ambitious culinary tour of the world.

This is my pick of classic Greek dishes and where to find them: fava on Santorini, dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) in Thessaloniki, and an Easter lamb feast on Tinos.

Snatch, The Inside Story

‘Making Brad (Pitt) look rough was hard work. We offered him debauched nights out, but he opted for make-up.’

Fae Hammond, the make-up artist on Guy Ritchie’s gangster movie ‘Snatch!’ had a tough job, hanging out on set with Brad Pitt, Vinnie Jones and Jason Flemyng. And so did I, when I was commissioned to edit this photographic book that tells the inside story of the movie shoot.

I interviewed all the cast and crew about what really went on behind the scenes. Gambling, pranks, and competitive press-ups were all part of the backstage antics. Extras ‘playing’ gangsters told stories that rang a little too true to real-life events.

The Truce Story

‘I hope that as young leaders of tomorrow, you will find this book an inspiration’ – Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations

Translated into seven languages, distributed to over 50 countries, and endorsed by UNESCO, The Truce Story is my first children’s book.

Taught in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Network Project in over 50 countries, including conflict regions, the comic book is accompanied by a Teacher’s Guide to enhance its educational value.

Mixing ancient Greek mythology with real-life adventure, The Truce Story is a modern allegory for peace. It was inspired by the Olympic Truce –  a ceasefire to allow all athletes to compete in the ancient Greek Olympics.

Travelers’ Tales Greece

Travelers’ Tales Greece is an anthology of over 30 stories that explore the ancient and modern wonder that is Greece.

My contribution is a short story about a baker named Hector, whose crusty loaves shaped the history of a small village on Corfu.

Delighted to be in the company of so many illustrious authors, including Paul Theroux, Robert D. Kaplan, Laurie Gough, Nicholas Gage, and Patricia Storace.

Time Out Athens

During a six-month stint working for Time Out, I edited their Istanbul and Athens guides.

I also contributed several chapters to Time Out’s Athens guide, including the scene-setting intro and my pick of the city’s best restaurants.

Time Out Istanbul

Istanbul is one of my favourite cities in the world. So I was delighted to get the gig to edit Time Out’s Guide to Istanbul.

Over endless little glasses of apple tea, I edited every chapter and shared some of my own city secrets  – from the best of the Bosphorus to how to score a bargain in the Grand Bazaar.
